The legend

How an emperor became a bunch.

  1. 1800

    The crossing

Napoleon leads his army over the Great St Bernard Pass. History says he rode a mule, on a sunny day. History is boring.

  2. 1801

    The painting

Jacques-Louis David paints him on a rearing stallion in a storm, cape flying, pointing to glory. Five versions. Peak propaganda.

  3. 1850

    The mule strikes back

Paul Delaroche paints the honest version: tired emperor, patient mule. Nobody makes it their wallpaper.

  4. Now

    Vive le raisin

The emperor turns into a bunch of grapes, the stallion gets shades, and the army marches on Monad: 400 ms blocks, purple as the empire.
